SCADA Replacement and Integration
BACKGROUND
SCADA Replacement and Integration
Client: CMI - Energy Unit
Location: Renace 2, 3, and 4 Hydroelectric Plants & Tactic Substation, Guatemala
Committed to spearheading renewable energy initiatives in Central America, CMI’s Renace Hydroelectric Plants are pivotal in providing sustainable electricity to Guatemala. A critical challenge emerged with the aging SCADA systems that required modernization to enhance operational reliability and efficiency. CMI embarked on an ambitious project to upgrade these systems, integrating control, communications, and monitoring with the Wholesale Electrical Market Control Center.
REQUIREMENTS
System Requirements
The existing SCADA system, reliant on outdated serial communication, lacked the robustness and flexibility needed for modern hydroelectric operations.
Key challenges included:
- Replacing outdated serial ports with advanced VLAN Ethernet setups
- Establishing reliable data transmission from remote locations, crucial for real-time decision-making
- Establishing redundant communications from two different locations
- Technologies: Satellite and Optical Fiber
OUR SOLUTIONS
Why KLG Smartec
We partnered with CMI and Electrotek to deploy a state-of-the-art SCADA replacement solution with Kyland industrial Ethernet switches that addressed all operational challenges:
- Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) Replacement: Four RTUs were replaced across multiple sites, enabling advanced control and data collection.
- Network upgraded to Optical Fiber: Transitioned from serial to Ethernet communications, utilizing high-availability networks designed with redundancy to prevent data loss.
- Optical Fiber and Satellite Link: Established a dual communication link via optical fiber from Tactic Substation and a satellite link from Renace 4, ensuring redundancy and high data availability.
- Advanced Equipment: Utilized SEL equipment for gateway functions and Kyland equipment for robust network management.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Achievements
The upgraded SCADA system significantly enhanced the efficiency and reliability of the Hydroelectric Plant Operations:
- Increased Operational Efficiency: Automation and improved data flow streamlined operations, reducing downtime and maintenance costs.
- Enhanced System Reliability: Dual communication links and modern Ethernet setups minimized system failures and enhanced disaster recovery capabilities.
- Future-Ready Infrastructure: With a scalable and adaptable network architecture, CMI is now better positioned to handle future expansions and technological advancements.
